A Journey of Strength, Passion, and Dedication: The BMW Berlin-Marathon Experience with Cheryl Tay

For Cheryl Tay, running a marathon is the ultimate test of endurance—both physically and mentally. Her journey began in 2022 when she embarked on her first trip to Berlin to represent BMW Group Asia and participate in one of the world’s most iconic races. It was her first overseas marathon, her second marathon ever, and her debut at a World Marathon Major: the BMW Berlin-Marathon.

“I had heard incredible things about the race—the energy, the camaraderie, and the unforgettable feeling of running alongside nearly 50,000 participants, all pushing their limits over 42.195 km,” Cheryl shared. She fondly recalled how spectators lined every step of the way, offering high-fives, holding motivational signboards, and cheering on the runners. "I’ll never forget the tears that welled up when I crossed the finish line. It was a life-changing experience, and I knew I had to share it with others."

Inspired by that experience, Cheryl and BMW Group Asia decided to expand the team. By 2023, she was not just running solo—she was leading a team of ten runners, including key opinion leaders (KOLs) and leaders from the local running community. This time, the race had a different feel. "Running with a team adds another layer to the experience," Cheryl explained. "It wasn’t just about me anymore. We were all in it together. Knowing someone was waiting for you at the finish line made each step feel lighter."

The BMW Berlin-Marathon is renowned for being one of the fastest marathon courses in the world, where many world records have been set. Yet, as Cheryl noted, the challenges begin long before the starting line. The time difference required careful planning, with some runners using apps to gradually adjust their sleep schedules before flying over. The unfamiliar diet in Berlin—far from the comfort of Asian meals, where rice is a staple—also posed a challenge. "You don’t get the chance to recce the route or experience it firsthand," she said. "You just have to trust your preparation and your body."

Cheryl also highlighted the financial aspect of competing overseas. "Traveling for a marathon comes with its own set of expenses—the currency differences, accommodations, and paying your way to be there," she acknowledged. "But for me, and for those I brought along, it was a price worth paying for the experience of a lifetime." To prepare, Cheryl and her team dedicated five months to training, gradually increasing their distances from 10km to 32km, ensuring they were ready for the challenge ahead.

By 2024, Cheryl’s team had grown to 13 runners from Singapore — a testament to how infectious the joy of running the BMW Berlin-Marathon had become. This year holds special significance, marking the 50th anniversary of the marathon, with BMW serving as the title sponsor since 2011. "BMW has made this dream accessible for many of us," Cheryl remarked. "Their support allowed us to bypass the ballot system or the high cost of securing a charity slot, making our participation seamless." Joining this exciting event is also Preeti Gupta, Sales Channel & Network Development Director of BMW Group Asia, who will be running her first-ever marathon, adding another layer of excitement to the occasion.

Beyond the joy of participation, what makes the experience even more rewarding is knowing that less than one per cent of the world’s population has completed a marathon. "To be part of that exclusive group is something special," Cheryl reflected. "As I’ve grown older, I’ve realised that personal goals often take a backseat to material ones. Running has given me focus, a sense of purpose, and something to work towards. It’s a sport that offers quick, tangible results that make me feel accomplished."

Cheryl’s recent visit to the BMW Eurokars Experience Centre, where she test-drove the BMW iX3, further reinforced her commitment to sustainability. The iX3, with its seamless blend of luxury, performance, and eco-friendly technology, aligned perfectly with her values. "Driving the iX3 feels great because I know I’m doing my part for the environment without compromising the driving experience BMW is known for," she said.

This dedication to sustainability extends beyond Cheryl’s personal journey to the BMW Berlin-Marathon, where the BMW iX serves as the official safety car. Additionally, the latest BMW i models are used as shuttle and organisation vehicles, underscoring the commitment BMW has to modern technology and the sustainable development of both the automotive industry and the sport of running.

For Cheryl, running the BMW Berlin-Marathon is about much more than crossing the finish line—it’s about discipline, resilience, and finding joy in the process. "Running any marathon is about pushing yourself beyond your limits, finding joy in the journey, and realising that with the right support and determination, even the biggest dreams are within reach," she shared.

Thanks to BMW Group Asia, Cheryl has been able to chase her dreams and inspire others to do the same. Now, she invites BMW Eurokars owners passionate about running to join her in the annual BMW Berlin-Marathon. It's a chance to push limits, share the camaraderie of the BMW community, and experience one of the world’s greatest marathons together.
